Lafayette Area Birth Services

Posted by in Birth, Parenting, Pregnancy

I was thinking of just writing a brief post about what I’m doing and sending you to the CHOICES website for any input, but then, I thought, “Why not get all thorough with an explanation of my plans?!” So here I go. As you may, or may not know, I’ve been helping a friend with our local CHOICES group. (Check out the website to see what it’s all about!) Since I’ve been involved, it’s been my desire to help this group grow. Every month the number of people attending the…read more

Postpartum Doula Training

Posted by in Birth, Doula

I got an email from a local Doula yesterday about an upcoming Postpartum Doula Training Workshop. I initially jumped to the invitation and added the dates to the calendar that John and I share, but then saw the price. So, I think I’ll be waiting on any training of that sort. It’s not a grand amount of money, but it’s not something we can afford right now. Plus, I’m not sure if being a Postpartum Doula is something I would want to do. Right now my focus is on my…read more

Come see what I’m doing over here!

Posted by in Birth, Blogging

I have started another website! This one is going to be a joint effort between myself and a few other lovely people. Things are barely started, but I’d love it if you would take a look at what I’m doing. The basic idea is to have one place to find resources within Indiana that support a healthy pregnancy and/or a natural birth. I also plan to consistently write there to raise awareness about issues pertaining to those subjects. So I’ve got quite a bit of work to do, but I’m…read more

The Shape of a Mother

Posted by in Baby, Birth

Last night my friend showed me the website The Shape of a Mother. It is dedicated to “letting out the secret” about how a woman’s body looks while pregnant and postpartum–imperfections and all. Here is the story of how it all got started. One day I sat in a restaurant in Anaheim, California eating breakfast, when a woman passed by my table with her infant carrier in tow. As she lifted it up to fit between the tables, her shirt raised and I saw that, although she was at a…read more

CNM

Posted by in Birth, Breastfeeding

The other night I attended a seminar with the purpose of introducing the community to the new Certified Nurse Midwife that will be working at the Clarian Arnett Hospital. This will be the first CNM to work at a hospital in our area. What an amazing breakthrough! Welcome, Sharon Smith, CNM! My hope is that the demand for care from a Midwife will rise, and the hospital will hire more. Our community is in dire need of some change and improvement upon prenatal and childbirth care. Like I have said…read more

Free Standing Birth Center

Posted by in Birth

On one of the blogs I follow, the question was asked by a local nurse if we want a freestanding birth center in our area. Her words: Would folks who want a homebirth because of the restrictive nature of the hospital, come to a freestanding birth center? Is there a demand for Birth Centers? Especially a Birth center across the street from the hospital that has a large staff and 24 hour Ob and anesthesia folks so they can handle anything you throw at them. And a Nicu would be…read more

My Transition

Posted by in Birth

To expand upon my last post, I’ll give you some insight on how my transition in my labor with Archer went. What I want to emphasize is that sometimes, during transition, a laboring woman needs some encouragement. What she also needs is the knowledge of what is happening with her body. I had a pretty good grasp on how labor progresses and was prepared if things got tough. My husband and I took a Bradley Method birth class that was wonderful. It broke down the stages of labor, explained exactly…read more

Natural Birth

Posted by in Birth

Over the weekend a new mother had the birth of her child live streaming on the internet. I didn’t hear about her plan to do this prior to the event; I caught on to it through other Twittering moms I follow while she was laboring. I don’t know the details, but what I gather is that her plan was to have a natural birth. With her were both a Doula and Midwife in the hospital. Sounds like a great support team for a natural birth. But, as this mother’s labor…read more
